What is your next move?

“You don’t have to know everything about the mountain in front of you to take the next step” Louie Giglio

Do you know that feeling of not knowing what you want and have no idea how to figure that out? Or maybe you do know what you want, but honestly it feels so overwhelming when you think of everything that you have to do to get there? Not to worry my friend, because things may actually be less complicated than you think they are.

Speaking for myself, I’ve always struggled to get going. Instinctively I knew that I had been given all these opportunities and that it was just for me to extend my hand and reach out and grab them, but boy, with that came a lot of pressure to make sure that it was the right decision and that I knew from start to finish what consequences that would have. You know what that was like? Exhausting. Exhausting for me, for my loved ones, because I would wine about it all the time and yet do absolutely nothing because I froze up.

Here’s what I’ve learned from the great ones: you don’t need to have all the steps figured out before taking the first step. And the one after that. As you move along, the path will become clear. Much like climbing a mountain, you won’t always be able to see the way to the top, but you know that it is there and as you continue the path will reveal itself and you will know whether to go right, left or straight ahead.

Can you see how liberating that is? And it is something you can apply to your life immediately. All of a sudden the pressure to have your goal entirely figured out, or your life for that matter, becomes obsolete. You can only take one step at a time anyway, and that is all you need to focus on.

The horrible thing about pressure and not knowing the entire way that will lead you to your goal is that you will most likely, like I have done so often, freeze in place. You don’t know how to figure out all the steps (spoiler: you literally can’t, because you don’t know what you don’t know) and so decide not to take a run at those you do know.

And so the one thing you can do and should do: take that next right step. It may not always be easy, but it will always be that simple.

WCYDN (What Can You Do Now)

  • Remember: you can’t go wrong. The worst thing you can do is nothing. You’ve done that yesterday. Today, take that first step. It may seem small. It may seem insignificant. But it’s not – it is the first step to uncovering a better life.
  • Allow for some stillness. Go inwards. Take a break, close your eyes, and breathe. As you do so, ask your soul what that next step is. Sometimes the answer will be clear immediately, sometimes you will need to give it some times. Both is fine, as long as your focus remains.
  • Take action. Seems simple enough right? One guarantee that you have is that if you don’t do anything, nothing will get done. So figure out that next step and get about the business of doing it.
  • The great thing about this little routine is that it helps you not to get overwhelmed, it saves space in your mind which is already overloaded and the very best is: you can do it until infinity. Just ask yourself that one question every day: what is the next right move?

I hope this little trick will help you in uncovering your best life! And I would love to connect with you. What do you find hard when actually taking that step towards working to your goal? Do you have a tendency to get overwhelmed, and if so, do you have a coping strategy like this one in place?
